chocolate chip cookie dough

eggless chocolate chip cookie dough you eat from the freezer

That’s right, chocolate chip cookie dough on a stick. No baking required. Freeze it, dip it in chocolate, and then… Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!… Wow, are these things good.

It all started last week when I asked Dan’s oldest son (let’s call him L-Train) what sort of treat he’d like for his birthday. Initially, he really wanted a cheese calzone and since I’ve made calzones a few times before, I said “No problem.” But then he said: “I want a cheese calzone just like the school cafeteria makes them.”

Whatchu talkin’ ’bout Willis?

I apologetically informed L-Train that I do not possess the Lunch Lady’s recipe so could not guarantee that the cheese calzone would be exactly the same as he has at school (by the way, this was all a week before school began so I guess he was feeling withdrawals after a long summer without his cheese calzone hot lunch).

Visibly disappointed, he considered the calzone issue. Then changed his mind and announced: “I want chocolate chip cookie dough” (his emphasis, not mine).

Me: Not cookies?
L-Train: “No… dough. I want to eat the dough.

pickled carrots

Last week I had a pickling urge. Am I the only one who gets these kinds of urges?

Anyhow, the pickling urge was strong. No vegetable was safe. I made pickled beets (which I’ll share later) and then early Friday morning I attacked the carrots.

creamsicle float

creamsicle float

The last few weeks the temperature has been feeling almost fall-like, and I was starting to cook fall-like stuff. You know, soups and roasts and stuff. Then today, I sat there writing a post as sweat rolled down my knee pits, and suddenly soup felt all wrong.

Actually, everything felt wrong except sticking my head in the freezer. While I was in there, I had an idea. It’s not really a recipe, just a little inspiration to help you beat the late-arriving heat.

lemon bars

Dear friends, I made lemon bars. I made them and I ate them and ate them. And then I sent them away.

Truth: I cannot be left alone with an entire batch of lemon bars.

lemons

It all started when a friend gave us a bag of lemons. I love lemons. But I was paralyzed by the question: what do you do with that many lemons?

kale chips

kale chip

For any of you who read lots of food blogs like I do, kale chips are old news. I first saw crispy kale on Steamy Kitchen in 2009. That’s like so last year.

I wasn’t into the whole kale thing back then. No, I was still making and eating dozens upon dozens of cookies. Ah, yes… those were the days.

Anyway, I do eat kale now. In fact, during the detox I did last month, I ate about a metric ton of kale. Well, maybe it was a little less than that, but still I ate lots of kale and other green things.

Kale is the new chocolate. Okay, that’s a lie. But I do like it. Especially in soups… and now as chips.

Let’s face it, sometimes you just want to munch on something while you’re parked in front of the television. And while potato chips (with a side of M&Ms) might be my first choice in that department, kale chips are a tasty substitute that are easy to make at home (meaning you know what’s in them) and they’re pretty healthy to boot.

What do they taste like? Have you had toasted, salted seaweed? To me, it is a neighbor of that flavor which I love. But even if you don’t like seaweed, don’t be afraid. Dan is not a big seaweed fan but loved these chips (stuffed-them-into-his-face-by-the-handfuls kind of love). He and our friend Tom said the flavor reminds them of pumpkin seeds. I’m not sure where they get that, but whatever they taste like, kale chips are addictive. You have been warned.

Let’s make some…
