I was hanging out in the living room when Dan’s eight year old asked with a twinkle in his eye if I would help him make Jello. A few months ago, I showed him how easy Jello is to make, and now it is his specialty.

And tonight, he proclaimed himself the Jello King. But when I asked him about his title, he said I could just call him the Jello Dude. (I’m not making this up).

He even comes up with his own “recipes”. A few weeks ago, he added chopped up bits of Red Vines to orange Jello… so at the bottom of each bowl there were a few soft Red Vine bites. It was not bad.

For tonight’s “recipe”, he searched through the leftover Halloween candy and found inspiration in the form of mini-M&M’s and raisinets. As shown in the photo above, both wound up in the bottom of each bowl. At that point, I was really unsure about the new “recipe”… weren’t the candy coatings going to melt once the warm Jello hit it? But that’s the way the Jello Dude wanted it. Okay… why not?

As we filled the bowls with lemon Jello, each turned a different color. It was an interesting kind of magic to watch… and reminded me a little of Willy Wonka.

I’m not sure how I feel about eating this “chocolate lemon jello” tomorrow, but the Jello Dude was stoked with the results… and graciously gave me permission to write about it. :)

Lovely story. Made my day – can’t wait to try this with my little one :)

LOVE it. Betcha Jello Dude teaches us all something, including to experiment even if logic dictates “it might be icky”. Rock on, Jello Dude!

Good for you! Creativity is my motto in the kitchen & I think its very cool that you are ‘cooking’ with a kid. Some of my best memories involve me baking with my sister, so I promise this will long be remembered. Go Jello Dude!
