I think I’m in love.

It was Saturday night and I had just left the BlogHer Food conference.  It was a warm night in San Francisco as I walked the few short blocks to Tropisueño for the after party hosted by Elise Bauer (Simply Recipes), Jaden Hair (Steamy Kitchen), and Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman).  The party was already hopping when I arrived with Colleen from Foodie Tots and Cheese and Champagne.  Let me just say, those ladies throw one heck of a party. Really though, I only mention the party because it was there that I fell in love.  Completely. Totally.

How do you like my new dress?

by Patricia on September 25, 2009 · 8 comments

Okay, it’s not a dress. It’s a new look for my site. I started making small changes a couple of weeks ago and I just couldn’t stop.
So… what do you think? I’d love to hear your opinions (“I love it!”, “I hate it!”, “You smell funny”… you know, whatever you’re thinking) and please let me know if I overlooked something or broke something (there are bound to be a few glitches as the changes settle in).

And since I’ve been too busy mucking around in css and php code to do much baking, here are a few recipes that caught my eye on other blogs…

a little food for thought…

A delicious mess

chocolate-soup-filled

It started out innocently enough. I was struck with a chocolate craving… a creamy, comforting kind of chocolate craving. This meant pudding. Not just pudding but pudding pie complete with a graham cracker crust. Sounds delicious, right?

There I was standing in Dan’s kitchen, defenseless against the siren song of chocolate pudding pie. I had everything I needed to make chocolate pudding (though honestly this would be my first non-packaged pudding adventure).  I had a few graham crackers leftover from our camping s’mores.  And I had some heavy cream which is mandatory because what is chocolate pudding pie minus the whipped cream? Naked, that’s what. And we can’t have that.  Okay, everything I needed was there in the kitchen.  Or was it?  Wait a second, there is no pie pan in Dan’s kitchen. Had the temptation been mild, the chocolate undertow weak, I may have stopped right there. If I had been patient and wise, I might have waited until I got home where I have not one but two pie pans (Note to self: take one to Dan’s house).  But the pudding gods had spoken and I had no choice but to continue down this path no matter how ill-equipped I might be.

*Light bulb moment*… I will use a muffin tin and make cup-pies.  You know, kind of like Chuck makes in Pushing Daisies Season 1, except mine would be even more innovative in that they’d be pudding pies… aw yeah, I am a genius!  That’s right, warm yourself in the glow of my otherworldly brain powers.  Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time anyway.

Shameless

by Patricia on September 16, 2009 · 4 comments

Dear Readers,

I have a favor to ask. *looks down nervously*… You see, there is a little thing coming up in November where Foodbuzz will be handing out awards for things like best blog, who you’d like to have dinner with, best food photography, etc., etc.  (You can read more about the full list of categories and other information here.)  And while I try to be relaxed and chill, and pretend that such things matter not to me… no, I’m not competitive… the truth is I like awards.  But then who doesn’t?

Well, all of this is to say that I need your help.  I cannot win anything unless I am nominated for something. The nominations are very democratic: anyone can nominate anyone. Easy enough right? So if you wouldn’t mind taking a few minutes out of your day, I would really appreciate a nomination. Any category will do… beggars can’t be choosers.   The nomination form is hosted by Survey Monkey. It is two pages long. You can fill in all or none or just one or two.

Sincerely,

Shameless in California

Roasted tomato soup

Roasted tomato soup
It wasn’t until I moved to California that I began to appreciate changes in weather. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and all of that. Growing up, my time was split between Georgia and Texas, and in both states we lived on the coast so the storms could be spectacular. But I took the almost daily summer thundershowers for granted. It’s just what the weather did… how boring.

Then after a year of sunshine and mild California weather, I went back to Atlanta to visit friends. It was July. We were at an outdoor party enjoying grilled hamburgers and sunny weather when all of a sudden a dark cloud rolled in. Within minutes, we were being pelted by quarter-sized raindrops. Everyone at the party ran for shelter… except for me. I ran into the rain and looked up. I let the drops hit my cheeks and shoulders. I was so happy to see real rain that I didn’t care about the funny looks I was getting from the rest of the party-goers.. About fifteen minutes later, the rain stopped and the party resumed outside.
After that short rain shower, I was flooded with memories of rainy days. Sitting at the sliding glass door watching the water come down in sheets. The cool, clean smell after a big shower washed down the trees. And I remembered the time I was five when my best friend and I went sloshing around her backyard with a tiny umbrella between us during a storm. We got soaked to the bone but it was so much fun.

It doesn’t rain very often here, so I miss it (though we get the extended drizzle sometimes). But yesterday we had a good, long rain shower. I cracked my backdoor so I could hear it hitting the trees. When I woke up this morning, the rain was gone, but it left behind a crispness in the air that said it is now unmistakably fall.
